Dorsal spines : 0; Dorsal soft rays : 13-21; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 12 - 23. Belly fairly sharply keeled. A black or golden spot behind gill opening; upper part of pectoral fins dusky; caudal fin pale yellow with dusky hind margin. Resembles small S. maderensis which has more gill rakers and grey caudal fin, with tips almost black. Differs from S. aurita by having 7 pelvic fin rays and no black spot on hind part of gill cover.
