Vertebrae: 120. Barbapellis is a gymneline zoarcid, as defined by Anderson (1994), with the following combination of characters: a system of cephalic skin crests and prominent flaps, composed by one nasal, two maxillary, two anteromandibular and two posteromandibular flaps, and one mediodorsal, two laterodorsal, two supraorbitomaxillary, two preoperculomandibular, two internoventral, and two externoventral crests; preoperculomandibular pores 6; suborbital pores 4; postorbital pores 2; nasal tubes elongate; large, flexible, and highly palmate pectoral fins (length 143.9% HL); pectoral-fin rays 12?13; pelvic fins present; gill slit restricted; minute and sparse scales on body; lateral line mediolateral, short, not continuing on body; palatine and vomerine teeth present; vertebrae 21 + 99 = 120 (Ref. 87479).
