This species belonging to the Leiognathus splendens complex is distinguished by the following characters: no scales on cheek; anterior dorsolateral body surface widely naked; lower margin of inner preopercular ridge smooth; no scales on interspace of pelvic keels; weak second spines of dorsal and anal fins (widths of dorsal and anal spines 0.72-1.2% SL and 0.60-0.91% SL, respectively); dark blotch on dorsal fin rather pale, grayish (Ref. 75583).
