Guppies.za.net is an independent aquarium fish reference, written and maintained by Maarten Kronberger in Port Edward, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. The site started with guppies, which we keep and breed, and grew into a care reference for the fish South African hobbyists actually keep, alongside a full encyclopedia of fish species.
Where our information comes from
Scientific names, classification, distribution and biology come from FishBase, the global fish database maintained by the FishBase Consortium (Froese, R. and D. Pauly, eds.), used under its CC BY-NC 4.0 licence. Every species page links back to its FishBase record.
Aquarium care parameters (temperature, pH, hardness, tank size, temperament, diet and community suitability) were originally compiled by the hobbyist reference site badmanstropicalfish.com, which is no longer online. We have checked, corrected and standardised that data, converted it to metric with imperial equivalents, and written our own descriptions from it.
Where we write from first-hand experience, such as keeping and breeding guppies or running our 250 litre community aquarium, the species page says so in a section headed "From our own tanks".
How to read a species profile
Species with a full care profile show a care table and a summary written from structured data. Other aquarium species show FishBase facts, and wild or commercial species that are rarely kept in home aquariums appear only in the fish encyclopedia as reference entries.
