Body compressed and deep (depth contained 2.0 to 2.3 times in standard length); mouth small and terminal with thick, fleshy lips. Dorsal fin with 11 to 12 spines and 13 to 16 soft rays (XI, XII, 13-16); pectoral fins shorter than head, not reaching origin of anal fin; lateral line with 45 to 52 scales; scale series above lateral line parallel to it; back brownish; belly silvery; flanks with 5 dark vertical bars; fins dark (Ref. 55763).
