This species is distinguished from its congeners entering the freshwater basin of the Mediterranean basin by the following characters: convex dorsal profile; 40-60 thin gill rakers in individuals larger than 20 cm SL (different populations average between 47 and 51); no teeth on palatine (Ref. 59043).
