Dorsal spines (total): 9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 10; Vertebrae: 25. Head with six blue bands with three slightly oblique, extending downward from lower part of preopercle onto inter opercle. The top of the head and back brownish; lower two-thirds of the head and body whitish. There is a brilliant blue mid ventral strap on throat. With five to six predorsal scales (rarely 4); two cheek scale rows behind eye, three below eye. A low, scaly sheath at the bases of dorsal and anal fins. Scales large.
