Dorsal spines (total): 9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 11-13; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 11 - 13. Head with narrow dark-edged blue bands; male usually with a broad band across anterior interorbital space. Scales on body with dark-edged light blue spots (female) or vertical lines (male). Color of female form brown, reddish brown ventrally; male form olive. Blue-edged bar on pectoral base dusky orange-red in female, orangish to dusky in male. Dorsal spines flexible. Caudal fin truncate to slightly rounded.

Distribution
Indo-Pacific: Red Sea and South Africa (Ref. 4392) to Easter Island, north to Japan (Ref. 38029), south to Australia. Not found in the Hawaiian Islands, but replaced by the closely related Anampses cuvier. Southeast Atlantic: southeast coast of South Africa (Ref. 4392).
