Biology
Dorsal spines (total): 9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 28-30; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 19 - 21. Coradion differs from Chaetodon by having fewer dorsal spines (8-10 vs. 11-16) that progressively increase in length from front to back, and a complete lateral line with 43-52 scales (lateral line incomplete with 22-55 scales in Chaetodon). All Coradion also possess somewhat elevated soft dorsal and anal fins, giving them a 'high-bodied appearance', and a similar color pattern of four broad orange to bronze bands. Juveniles with white-edged ocelli in dorsal fin that reduces to a black spot in adults (Ref. 48636).

Indo-Pacific: scattered colonies along the coast of Queensland, the Frankland Group off north Queensland, Western Australia, and New Guinea; Indonesia and the Philippines, and very seldom along the Chinese coast. Recently reported from Tonga (Ref. 53797).
